Podcast Recommendation: Joe Exotic

joe exotic podcast recommendation

If you haven’t caught on by now, if there’s a podcast hosted by Wondery, I’m there. Joe Exotic is a 6-episode podcast series following the story of the self proclaimed “Tiger King”. Now, you may have already watched the Netflix special. However, I feel like you get a broader scope of the story by listening to this podcast. I only watched the first 2 episodes of the Netflix series and I just couldn’t deal. His mullet, his personality, and then add Carole Baskin in the mix, I’m out! Joe Exotic allows you to listen the story in an uninterrupted fashion where you can form your own opinion based on facts.

Rob Moor hosts this thrilling podcast which explains the feud between Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin. Two cat loving people who just can’t seem to get along. Joe ran a zoo in Oklahoma and gained popularity through his YouTube channel, singing “career”, and of course, exotic animals. Carole Baskin is the owner of Big Cat Rescue, an animal sanctuary in Florida. When she accused Joe of animal cruelty in his zoo, she put a big target on her back. And so the war between her and Joe Exotic began.

Joe Exotic threatened Carole Baskin directly and indirectly for years until he was later convicted in 2020 for hiring a hitman to kill her. Carole on the other hand is famously known for being accused of killing her husband, Don Lewis who goes missing.. The interesting twist is the accusation of feeding him to one of her tigers. Carole and Joe are either the perfect match or two of the worst people. Either way, this podcast hits every mark with detailed backgrounds of both characters to keep you engaged.

I have to say that this podcast made the story much more tolerable than watching the series. It keeps you interested after every episode wanting to learn more about this ridiculous feud. The noteriety that these two have gained over their love for cats but hate for each other is comical. It also has the true crime aspect which I really enjoyed.

I would highly recommend giving this podcast a try if you’re interested in the story but can’t get yourself to sit down and watch the shit show unfold.
