Over the weekend, Justin and I celebrated our 6-year dating anniversary. Is that even a thing once you’re married to celebrate your dating anniversary? I don’t know BUT I do know that 6 years is a long time and it truly has flown by. With our wedding anniversary being next week where we’ll take a trip to Santa Barbara (stay tuned for a review on that), we decided to do something low key. The weather was going to be in the 90’s, so we searched for places to picnic in San Francisco. That’s when we came across Sutro Heights Park on the coast.
Where to Park
If you’re not familiar with where Sutro Heights is, it’s deep in San Francisco but on a day like Sunday where the weather was absolutely gorgeous, it was a nice drive. When you arrive, you may be confused on where to park because the GPS doesn’t really pin it down very well so hopefully this helps. We drove to the top of the hill and on your right is where you’ll see a small parking lot. If you’re lucky, you may find a spot but if you’re unlucky, you might find a spot and then your car will get broken into.
I wouldn’t really suggest parking in that lot as we saw lots of broken glass on the ground. Instead we kept driving up the hill a little bit more and then you hit the residential area. There was plenty of parking here and from this direction you’ll be entering the park through the back.
Where to Picnic
When you enter the park you’ll want to walk in the direction of the water which is below you. If you keep that direction then you’ll hit the big stone structure with plants and flowers that are so pretty you can’t miss. I mean seriously how often is it in the 80’s in SF? Directly in the front of the structure is a stone path leading towards it. This is where you’ll have optimum views of the ocean and a perfect setting. Now of course you have an entire park to find a spot in but this is the area that I highly recommend if you love ocean views and outdoors.
In tow we had our picnic bag, charcuterie board and all of the fixings, or my little masterpiece as I like to call it. Topped off with rose, it was a super romantic outing that is sometimes much needed. Side note, I wouldn’t recommend coming here on a windy day, that would totally spoil the mood!
When it comes to what to wear, I would keep it on the more casual side. If you feel like dressing up a little at least wear comfortable shoes. I chose a knotted t-shirt dress with slip-ons that were super comfortable to walk in. Depending on where you park, you may have to do quite a bit of walking so keep that in mind. When it comes to places to picnic in San Francisco this is such a gem! Outfit linked below through the LTK app.
